Changing Lives One Room at a Time

Hello Defined Designers!

Last month I had the opportunity to be part of an amazing charity project. The charity is Designed from the heart. The charity was founded by Heidi Bendetson. The charities objective is to help heal people in need with the gift of beauty. What would be a better way than to do that by bringing beauty to the very place people have saught that help. The project took place at Beit T’Shuvah a renowned rehabilitation center in Los Angeles.

How did I get involved you ask? Anat Aharoni my former blogging partner came across a flyer at HD Buttercup. She quickly asked me to join her. I was so excited to be able to be a part of something that would help those in need especially those in the process of sobriety. Being from a family that has dealt with various types of addiction and that has even taken the life of one of the most important people in my life, I was honored to be a part of something that could make a difference.

Anat and I teamed up with Deborah Gregory of DiG Interiors and our design team was born. In early March we toured Beit T’Shuvah and were given our room assignment. We were assigned Room 215 in the men’s quarters. We were shocked when we saw the condition of the room. But we were up for the challenge. Take a look at what we saw for the first time:

After measuring and photographing our room we quickly got to the drawing board. Here is a look at our preliminary room sketch:

It was definitly a challenge to find the products we needed for the space. It took some time to contact vendors, clients, friends and family but we were able to get what we needed to accomplish the goal; to make this room feel like a getaway. Take a look at the process and the final product:

I thought a personal touch of inspirational quotes was fitting for the space. I wanted the residences to feel inspired and cared for through their journey. Here is one of the quotes that was represented on the wall:

“The meaning of life is not what happens to us it is what we do with that which happens to us” Dr. Viktor Frankl

John the residant of room 215

All the labor and work was put in by Anat, Deborah, and I. We could not of done it without my amazing husband Gordon, Anats father, Deborah’s husband Brian, and CRAIG MILLER and his team. This project was definitley a learning experience. I can now say I designed from the heart and it is truely an amazing feeling. I cannot wait to do more meaningful work as I grow further into my design career.
